Research projects

Janv. 2025-Dec 2025. Mediating Plant Encounters: cross self-confrontations of educational workshops at the botanical garden.

Our research considers botanic gardens as educational places for plant awareness and humans/more-than-humains relations. With this project, we aim at establishing JBN-UniNe as a reference center for plant education, in the context of actual reflections on the role of botanical gardens for environmental education at the Anthropocene. We will work with a small group of experts, and use the methodology of cross self-confrontations (a co-analysis methodology based on video recordings of educational activities) to identify mediations used by cultural mediators in school workshops.

9. Presentation of some research achievements (with a selection of recent relevant publications)

Working at the boundaries of scientific knowledge – Connecting disciplines

I have been connecting fields and communities, building bridges and pioneering interdisciplinary collaborations that could open up new areas of research. Here are two examples of this approach, one early in my career and one more recent: as a cognitive psychology student, I wrote a master’s thesis (co-advised by Guy Politzer and Dan Sperber, who didn’t know each other before) that connected the fields of belief revision and pragmatics, thus contributing to building the nascent field of experimental pragmatics

More recently, in 2019, as chair of the Working Group on Education from the COST Action on Citizen Science, I organised a workshop with experts in artificial intelligence on human and machine learning in the field of citizen science, which is now also contributing to an emerging and exciting scientific field, with follow-up scientific activities (a book chapter, two special issues, and a symposium):

  • Franzen, M., Kloetzer, L., Ponti, M., Trojan, J. & Vicens, J. (2020). Machine Learning in Citizen Science: Promises and Implications. In Vohland, K., Land-Zandstra, A., Ceccaroni, L., Lemmens, R., Perello, J., Ponti, M., Samson, R., Wagenknecht, K (Eds). The science of citizen science. Springer.
  • Co-edition of a Special Issue of Citizen Science Theory and Practice on Citizen Science and Artificial Intelligence (with Prof. Lucy Fortson, University of Minnesota, USA; Prof. Kevin Crowston, University of Syracuse, USA; and Dr Marisa Ponti, University of Gothenburg, Sweden). Publication in Autumn 2024.

Participative and transdisciplinary research on collaboration, learning and development in professional settings

I study lifelong learning and development in relation to work collaboration, in changing work environments, with a focus on the analysis of social and material interactions, technological change, and a socio-cultural perspective on the interplay of institutional, interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics in development. I am  well recognised as an international expert on professional learning, activity analysis, dialogism, and innovative qualitative methods, particularly inspired by the French tradition of development activity clinics. I have been involved as member and as scientific experts in different international research projects (for example, EU RISE COLAB) and have been guest Professor in UK (Bournemouth University, 2018) and in France (Université de Nantes, 2023).

We are now involved with Prof. Rullac in a joint project on new forms of participation in social work for the new project proposal nccr-on-the-move changing solidarity CHSOL (Co-directors: Milena Chimienti, Thomas Geisen, and Emmanuelle Reuter).

Critical methodologies connecting Science and Citizens

I wish to transform the classical ‘exploitative or distant’ relationships between researchers and informants, so that research becomes a tool for democratic discussion and collective action on social and technological transformations. Therefore, I pay close attention to the conditions of collaboration with individual and institutional research partners, including aspects of ethics and the practical impact of research (Kloetzer, 2019, 2020, in press). Given these interests, I joined the emerging citizen science movement very early on, researching the dynamics of informal learning through participation in online citizen science projects since 2013 (Jennett et al., 2016, Kloetzer 2016, Schneider et al., 2018), and serving as a founding member and co-chair of the ECSA Working Group on Education.

Research for Social Transformation in times of Environmental Crisis

I have been interested for years in the potential of social transformation of science, and facing the environmental crisis, I have now invested heavily in the field of environmental psychology and education. Since my arrival at the University of Neuchâtel, I have established regular collaborations with the Conservation Biology Laboratory, and in 2023, we open a new interdisciplinary and interfaculty Master in Biodiversity Conservation (biology, anthropology, psychology and law). I have researched nature experiences and theatre as a vicarious experience of nature for young people, also in an interdisciplinary way, with a focus on language and experience of nature (we just organised in Neuchâtel the 2nd LEON – Language and Experience of Nature – Research Days in 2023). I have collaborated with the Botanical Garden of Neuchâtel in the creation of a public festival of science and art in June 2022 (Festival vivant, 24-26 June 2022). I am currently carrying out two research projects on the relationship between plants and animals, with the Botanical Garden of Neuchâtel and the Bioparc of Geneva. We created a research axis called PREMIS (for InterSpecies Practices, Relations and Mediations) in our research lab CURIOUS:

  • Deshayes, T., Kloetzer, L. Prévot, A-C., & Jimenez, M. S. (in press). Analyse discursive de « récits de nature » d’adolescent-es en France et en Suisse romande : une approche sociolinguistique des expériences de nature. Langage et société.

A passionate teacher, interested in innovative pedagogies: Performing Arts in Higher Education

Finally, I am a passionate teacher, engaged in transforming Higher Education, wishing to explore alternative ways of teaching and engaging students. For example, since 2015, I have created at the University of Neuchâtel three courses with innovative pedagogy, two of which received grants for Innovative Pedagogy from the University of Neuchâtel: one using theater to explore the psychology of migration, one inviting students to imagine and lead tinkering workshops with children in a third space to explore the sociomaterial dynamics of learning (with Prof. Iannaccone), one innovating on the teaching of Piaget thanks to the creation of an online course (in 2019-2020). One research project (ASCOPET, in collaboration with the EPFL Microcity, Prof. Henein) has also been created to research the learning dynamics which happen when we use performing arts in higher education. A first international symposium has been organized in 2019 (https://actu.epfl.ch/news/epfl-hosts-first-conference-on-performance-art-in-/), which contributes to the emergence of a practice and research network on this issue. The researchers of the ASCOPET project have been writing a book: Barefoot Academic Teaching: The Performing Arts as a Tool in Higher Education, in press.
