Vanessa F. A. Neves

Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil). She is currently serving as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Education (2022–2026). She coordinates the research group Estudos em Cultura, Educação e Infância (Studies in Culture, Education, and Childhoodhttps://enlacei.com.br/). At present, she is leading a longitudinal and ethnographic research programme entitled Cultural Development in Collective Contexts, which aims to contrast the lived experiences of infants and young children across different early childhood education settings. This programme is grounded in the theoretical and methodological frameworks of Cultural-Historical Psychology and Ethnography in Education. It encompasses a range of research initiatives at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. She has supervised 8 PhD and 10 Master dissertations.

Education and training

2017-2018 – Postdoctoral position at The Ohio State University. Supervisor Prof. Laurie Katz. My topic was children’s ways of participating in Early Childhood Education Centres.

2007-2010 – PhD in Education, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG – Brazil). My advisors were Prof. Maria Lucia Castanheira (UFMG – Brazil), Prof. Maria Cristina S. Gouvêa (UFMG – Brazil) and William Corsaro (Indiana University – US). My topic was the transition from Early Childhood Education to Elementary School.

2003-2005 – Masters in Social Psychology, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. My advisor was Prof. Lúcia Afonso (UFMG – Brazil). My topic was children’s perspectives of an Early Childhood Education Centre.
